Choose a format for the job
Use the tool when a photo needs a square crop, a portrait story shape or a landscape thumbnail. Presets cover Instagram posts and stories, X/Twitter posts, LinkedIn posts, YouTube thumbnails and Facebook posts.
Choose your preset and JPG or WebP output, then select an image. Choose left, center or right and top, center or bottom where cropping is needed. Click “Resize and compress” to see the result. The ready result shows the exact downloadable image, its dimensions and approximate file size. Inspect the preview before downloading.
What the tool does
- Resizes to the selected preset without stretching, with center cropping by default and manual crop-position choices.
- Exports JPG or WebP using a fixed compression quality of 82%.
- Uses white behind transparency for JPG; WebP preserves transparency.
- Reports the output dimensions and approximate size, and warns when a small source has been enlarged.
JPG is the safest choice for social uploads. WebP is useful where both your browser and destination support it.
A small example
A synthetic 1600 × 1200 landscape image exported with the Instagram square-post preset becomes 1080 × 1080 pixels. The center square is kept and the sides are cropped before resizing.
A subject or caption close to an edge may be cut off. Move the crop toward the subject and resize again to inspect the preview. Changing a setting clears the old preview and download. Compression does not promise a particular file size or a smaller file than the original.
Important limits
Input formats are JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF, up to 20 MB. Animated images become a still image. Processing also limits very large decoded images to under 40 megapixels and 32,768 pixels per side.
There is no subject detection, fit-with-padding mode, quality slider or target-file-size setting. Small images are enlarged to fit the preset and can look soft. The tool cannot recover detail missing from the source.
Presets are convenient starting points, not a guarantee about every platform placement. Upload support varies, particularly for WebP. Reopen your saved image and check the destination’s requirements before publishing.
Will the crop keep your subject?
See before-and-after examples and use the aspect-ratio worksheet before you export.
Your file stays in your browser
The tool reads and processes your selected file locally in the browser. File contents and filenames are not uploaded to our servers or saved by the app. Close or refresh the tool tab to clear its working copy; original files and downloaded results remain on your device.
The tool uses Plausible for limited visit, processing, ready-output and download-request counts. These do not include file contents, filenames or file-derived values. Hosting and analytics services receive ordinary connection information. See the Litewares privacy note and the tool’s own disclosure.
Common questions
Will it always make my file smaller?
No. Resizing, output format, source compression and enlargement all affect file size. The result can be larger than the original.
Can I move the crop to keep a face or text?
Yes. Choose left, center or right and top, center or bottom, then resize to preview the result. A direction is disabled when that axis has nothing to crop. The tool does not detect subjects or add padding; inspect the preview yourself.
What happens to transparency and animation?
JPG fills transparent areas with white; WebP keeps transparency. Animated source images are exported as a still image.
